Dear President George W. Bush: When you took your oath of office, you swore to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” When you protect the Constitution, you also protect the people who live under the Constitution, and our rights. We are the parents and voters of the United States, and our children’s lives depend on you. Statistics show that 60% of the 50,000 vehicle crashes that occur in Illinois each year are attributed to alcohol. 80 people are killed each day by drunk drivers. Drunk driving is the leading killer of our children in the United States. These statistics led President George Bush Senior to declare drunk driving as a “Grave, continuing national crisis” on December 14, 1989. Unfortunately, the statistics have not significantly changed since that time. President Bush, please take action on behalf of our children, this country’s youth, and the future of America. Your current silence on drunk driving and repeat offenders condones the behavior, but the children of America deserve better. We are the voters in this country, and we are watching to see whether you will join us in protecting our children from the indoctrination of alcohol advertising. Stand up for America’s future by introducing and passing legislation to ban all broadcast alcohol advertising. Signed:
